The ground was cold and gritty beneath Sage’s feet. His nose still tingled, and something was wrong inside of him. He could feel Kirk’s dismay and the aching hurt as he left the property. He was sure he wasn’t imagining the welling pain that made each breath a gasp.

“What the hell, Sage? That was Kirk?” Stone grabbed his arm.

Sage pulled free. “Leave me alone.”

“He’s a witch.”

“He’s a vampire. Nothing has happened because we can’t even touch.” He stalked toward the house. “Are you happy? Even when I find someone I like, there is something in the way.”

Stone followed him into the house. “Why was he here?”

“To see me.” And now he was defending him. Lying for him. Who was he becoming?

The kiss on his nose, the shock and new sensations…he didn’t feel good, and he wanted to blame something other than the truth. It couldn’t be that. It didn’t happen like this. If Kirk was a witch, that changed everything. No, Stone had to be wrong about that.

“Just drop it. If you hadn’t followed maybe we’d be upstairs, and no one would’ve needed to know.”

“He knows what we are.”

“And? He’s as nonhuman as we are.” Sage started up the stairs.

“You’re playing a dangerous game.”

“I’m not playing any game.” He shouldn’t have started anything with Kirk. Had Kirk’s trespass set the seer’s trouble in motion? “He’s a vampire, I’m a cougar…we’re both smart enough to know it’s not going anywhere.”

Stone stood at the foot of the stairs. “That’s not what I meant. Vampires are witches.”

No, they weren’t. He’d know. Wouldn’t he? His nose tingled and Kirk’s hurt still bled through him even though they were miles apart by now.

This wasn’t happening and he wasn’t having this conversation with Stone. “I’m going to bed.”

“Sage.”

“There’s nothing to discuss. Don’t get your fur ruffled.” He stomped up the rest of the stairs and shut his door. He leaned against it, then rubbed his nose. If Kirk was a witch…but it hadn’t been a real kiss. It was meant to be a kiss that started the familiar bond.

It had been enough of a kiss. And Stone was right.

He tipped his head back against the wood and closed his eyes. He was in more trouble than he’d ever been in. Even though there could be nothing between them, the familiar bond had formed.

Kirk was his witch. His mate.
